Facebook has released a new image messaging app
Slingshot was already released by mistake about a week ago, now the official launch happened.
The app is a photo and video sharing app where users have to send a “reaction shot” as a reply in order to unlock and view the photo or video received.
Pictures are being deleted after they have been sent.
Snapchat is the biggest competitor in the area and after the company rejected a bid from Facebook, the social media giant put their Creative team to work to create something which will gain them users in the area and fight others growing quickly. Here is what the Creative team had to say about Slingshot:
“Today, we’re excited to launch a new app called Slingshot. With Slingshot, we wanted to build something where everybody is a creator and nobody is just a spectator. When everyone participates, there’s less pressure, more creativity and even the little things in life can turn into awesome shared experiences. This is what Slingshot is all about.”
Last but not least, you don’t need to have a Facebook account in order to use Slingshot. You can connect with your phone number and regular contact list but are of course also able to synchronize it with Facebook.
Facebook has tried to launch a photo and video messaging service in the past called Poke but that project failed. Since they now have not been able to gain features, users and stop competition through an acquisition like they did with Instagram and WhatsApp, it seems they put a lot of resources into this app which stands up well against the competition in terms of features.
